  • Princeville

    Princeville

This is just one moment in a display that seemed to go on for 30 to 45 minutes. The shapes and colors were constantly changing offering the onlookers a lovely light show. This is not the most dramatic or necessarily colorful of the images I got, but there is something about it that captures me. It is almost like an exclamation point, saying "Wow! watch this!"

  • Moloaa Before The Storm

    Moloaa Before The Storm

This is another look at Moloaa Beach. A storm was coming but this is a very protected beach and the surf never seemed to get very big, though I am sure it does on occasion.

  • Soon It's Going to Rain

    Soon It's Going to Rain

It is morning. Wind in our faces (and our lenses) clouds heading our way. The rain is coming. . .right at us. There is not much you can do when you are facing into the wind, when it starts raining, and if you keep shooting, your lens will get wet. And, likely, so will you. And that is what happened on this rainy morning on the north shore of Kauai.

  • The Pools of Mokolea

    The Pools of Mokolea

The Pools of Mokolea are located on the eastern shore of Kauai. They consist of a shelf of lava that extends our and around the peninsula. On the way out, there is a pool that is connected to the ocean. The pool is what you see here. Under the right conditions, the surf comes raging up onto the shelf, washes around and into the pool and is then returned to the sea via the underground tunnel. It is totally thrilling to be on the shelf when the surf is raging, to stand in the wash and capture the beauty and power of the ocean. Not recommended to do if you are not careful or if you do not have a buddy with you to help keep an eye on the surf.

  • Sunrise!

    Sunrise!

I was driving around one afternoon in the north shore of Kauai, looking for some good photography sites. In a residential area west of Hanalei Bay I found a narrow walking path leading between the houses and down to the beach. Exploring the area I saw its potential and returned next morning to see. The rock shelf was wonderful and as the light broke through the clouds the starburst put on its display. It seems almost every morning on Kauai offers some variation of beautiful.

  • Moloaa Beach

    Moloaa Beach

This lovely secluded beach is on the east side of Kauai. In the morning the light plays off the sand, rocks and water in an everchanging display. I am told this beach was part of the opening scene of Gilligan's Island, a tv series some years ago. It is definitely one of my favorite beaches.

  • Tunnels Beach

    Tunnels Beach

Tunnels Beach on the north side of Kauai is a wonderful place to start the day. At sunrise there are very few people on the beach save for the occasional jogger or stroller who move quickly on their ways. One morning there was a man sitting on top of one of the rocks in a lotus position apparently meditating or praying. He added an extra element to my morning that I deeply appreciated. This scene is from the west end of Tunnels looking back toward Princeville.

  • Waimea Waterfall

    Waimea Waterfall

In my view the best time to see these falls is in the early morning before the sightseers arrive. On this morning I was the only person there and the light was just right. A little later and the sun's rays hit the fall and the surrounding area making it very difficult to photograph. This was a very peaceful, serene moment at the falls.
